Hello again, dear blog readers! Today, we bring you a very special announcement.

This year, we teamed up with Simple Scrapbooks to search for the most amusing, entertaining, silly and witty scrapbooker out there: The Funnest Scrapbooker Ever (for 2009). We asked those zany enough to enter to:

  • Tell us a joke.
  • Tell us in 100 words why they should be crowned the Funnest Scrapbooker Ever (for 2009).
  • Send a wacky photo of themselves (wearing a costume, imitating a statue, etc).
  • Send a picture of their Funniest. Layout. Ever.
  • Create three playful layouts: one with a playful photo trick, one with a playful stamping trick, and one with a playful title or journaling trick.

We’re still recovering from the excessive-laughter-induced bellyaches that judging this contest created. And when the laughter (finally!) died down, we had our winner. A scrapbooker so funny she has blamed a fictional character for her car accident, actually owns a clown wig, and has created a layout with journaling that ends: “He was right. I was wrong. That happens so rarely that I thought I should document it.” Congratulations to:

tdavenportphoto

Terri Davenport of Toledo, Ohio!

Terri will enjoy the following prizes during her reign:

Here’s one of Terri’s hilarious page entries for your laughing enjoyment:

notabeach-funniest

Isn’t she a hoot?

Congratulations, also, to Autumn Baldwin and Emily Higbee, our two runners-up, who will not only step in and fulfill Terri’s duties should she be unable to complete her reign, but will each receive a $100 shopping spree at twopeasinabucket.com, a tiara and sash, and a mustache-a-day kit.

Here’s Autumn’s silly joke:

Q: What do you call cheese that doesn’t belong to you?

A: Nacho cheese! (Get it? Not-yo cheese)

And here’s Emily’s silly joke:

Top 5 signs you might be a scrapbooker:

  1. You’ve stayed up all night surfing the Internet for a sneak peak of the new “In colors” from Stampin’ Up!
  2. You’ve spent an hour in desperate indecision over using the last “e” from your favorite pack of Thickers.
  3. You’ve shown up at you’re husband’s uncle’s home (which happens to be near the hospital) in the middle of the night in labor, wanting to borrow his camera.
  4. Your outing with your girlfriends is ruined when you stop at the scrapbook store and start throwing elbows over the last Heidi Swapp mask.
  5. You purchase your daughter’s Easter dresses to match that perfect patterned paper.

Thanks to everyone who entered!

PARTY TIME
Let’s start the WCMD party early, shall we? Here’s a holiday greeting to get you in that celebratory mood.

WCMD-pink1

Frosted Flakes card by Megan Hoeppner. Supplies Cardstock, stamps and ink: Stampin’ Up!; Embossing powder: American Crafts; Ribbon: American Crafts, Making Memories and Stampin’ Up!; Gems: Doodlebug; Adhesive: Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L.

This card only requires a few strips of ribbon, some simple stamping, a little embossing, a few gems and a bit of cardstock for the base, making it a great card choice when it comes to designing in bulk.

 WCMD-supplies

Money-Saving Tip: When creating cards in bulk, it’s a good idea to use supplies that stretch, such as stamps and dies.

Here’s the same card in a different color palette.

WCMD-blue

Money-Saving Tip: Scraps are perfect for creating cards in bulk. If you run out of one color, as was the case with my ribbon bits, don’t be afraid to switch to another happy hue from your stash.

Design Tip: Adhere the stamped images with dimensional adhesive for added interest.

 lori-fairbanks

Hello again, blog readers!

Do you sew on your pages? I love the look, and after reading Ali Edwards’ article “15 Easy Stitching Techniques” in the October issue of Creating Keepsakes, I’m itching to pull out my needle and thread.

Whether you’re already using sewing machine or hand-stitching on your layouts or have never ventured into either technique, Ali’s article has so many great tips to share. Come along with me, and let’s get stitching!

 October 2009 CK

Nervous about keeping your stitches straight? Don’t be! Sometimes, a little waviness can be oh-so-charming. Check out the cool wavy border that Ali added to her “Generations” page. So pretty!

I like to stitch by hand—my grandmother taught me to embroider when I was a little girl. Even though it can be time consuming, it’s relaxing and a great way to multi-task when I’m watching TV. Check out these cute border designs that use basic embroidery stitches—I think these would be darling on a page:

Need a refresher on basic stitches? Here’s an easy guide:

basic-stitches

One tip I have for embroidery: Go ahead and knot the end of your thread (I have no idea why that’s a no-no in embroidery). It makes me feel like the stitching is more secure and I haven’t been able to see a difference in my projects.

Do you have any tips for stitching (by hand or machine) on your pages? Leave us a comment—we love hearing from you!

Weekly Warm-Up: Cropping for a Cause and WINNERS!

meganScrapbooking, like any creative outlet, is therapeutic. There’s just something about expressing oneself creatively that’s good for the soul. The same can be said on a larger scale—getting a group together to create for a cause is empowering and wonderful! I had the pleasure of experiencing just such an event last weekend, when I attended the Scrapping to Breathe crop, hosted by the beautiful Brenda Hurd. The goal of this crop was to raise money for cystic fibrosis, a terminal illness afflicting Brenda’s sweet son. I can’t think of a better way to spend my money. Plus, I had a blast getting together with the girls.

From left to right: Roxanne B.; P. Kelly Smith, Paper Crafts editor; some crazy lookin’ tall girl who needs to brush her hair and iron her shirt (me); Brenda Hurd; and Becky Olsen, the cute gal who invited me to this event in the first place. Thanks, Becky!

While at the event, I had a chance to chat with the always-adorable Wendy Sue Anderson. She put together an awesome layout kit for the event, which everyone in attendance received. Here’s what the page she made looks like.

WSA-Beautiful

Cutie-patootie, right? Do you want a kit of your own? Well, you’re in luck. There are still kits for sale here and you can purchase it knowing that your money is going to help Brenda with her goal of raising money for cystic fibrosis—sounds like a win-win to me!

Also, it just so happens we have a kit to give away to one lucky winner. Simply leave us a comment here between now and Friday, September 25 for a chance to win.

We’ll leave you with a few more snapshots from our day of play:

P. Kelly spent part of her crop time working on this sizzling birthday card. Who knew Johnny had a Paper Crafts tat? Surely he sports CK across his back. Oh, behave! charity-crop_Kelly

I spent some of my time working on this card for my niece, made with cheery paper from K&Company. charity-crop_card

To create leaves for the flowers, simply form a loop with thread and then tie a knot.

There you have it, the full crop report. We hope you’ve enjoyed this look inside Scrapping to Breathe.

Thank you, Brenda, for bringing people together for such a special cause. Keep up the amazing work!

Cheers!

P.S. We’ve posted winners from the House of 3Papertrey Ink and October Insider’s Look blog giveaways. Check the Giveaways tab at the top of the page to see who is taking home these great prizes! Come back often for even more chances to win.

Guest Blogger: CD Muckosky’s One Hour Layout!

headshot

Well, hello and Happy Friday, CK blog readers!

I am so excited to join you for some fun today. For those who may not know me, my name is C.D. Muckosky, and I was the first Creating Keepsakes Scrapbooker of the Year in 2006, regular columnist through 2007 and member of the CK Dream Team in 2008.

I hope your summer has been just super! Ours has been full of adventure and lots of fresh air. I’ve loved having all three of my girls home with me, and as we were getting everything organized to go back to school last week, I longed to be able to tuck them away and keep them right here at home with me every day! At this time of year I always seem to find myself reflecting on how we spend our time and how I want to live this life of mine.

The truth is, I love to tell the stories of our life in my scrapbooks. I love to weave a tale using heartfelt words and every little detail on my page to back them up. But sometimes scrapbooking is my own reflective time and creating is 100% for my own fun. Through my pages I am able to look back and reflect on what I was thinking, and I am giving my girls a window into my heart, a glimpse into who I am and who I want to be. Hopefully when they look at my art they will be inspired to reach a little bit further themselves.

CD_Lovely Limb

On a Lovely Limb by CD Muckosky. Supplies Patterned paper: Fancy Pants Designs; Ribbon: Making Memories; Rub-ons: Maya Road; Spray glitter: Glimmer Mist, Tattered Angels; Spray ink: Adirondack; India ink: Bombay, Dr. Ph. Martins; Acrylic paint: Liquitex; Art pencils: Prismacolor; Laser-cut cardstock ( mask): KI Memories; Digital Word Art: Chickie-D Art by CD Muckosky; Software; Adobe Photoshop; Pens: Uni-ball Signo, Newell Rubbermaid; Adhesive: 3D Foam Squares, Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L; Tacky Glue, Aleene’s; Other: Craft wire, hardware tape and masking tape.

Even though I like to take some “me” time to do this kind of page every now and then, this time of year is crazy busy, as I am sure it is for many of you, and I don’t have endless puttering hours to spare. So for this layout I limited my time to just ONE HOUR. One hour to reflect and play and pour out where I am right now onto one piece of paper.  Today I’m going to take you on a little visual journey through my layout process. Like a mini layout class for you right here—maybe you’ll even learn a new trick or two!

CD1_openStep 1: Choose photo and message. First, decide on the message you are wanting to share. (The whole page is going to reflect this, and you will want to keep it in mind as you work.) I chose a recent summer photo of myself and a piece of word art from the new “page tattoos” kit, coming soon to my online shop at Little Dreamer Designs. Open both your photo and your word art file in Photoshop ( or your photo editing software).(Note: If you don’t have a digital file to express your message, you can type over your picture with a cool font.)

CD2_drag and flatten

Step 2: Add text and print. Drag your file right onto your photo and re-size it if necessary. Flatten your image and print it out. It’s all ready to go on your page. Whoo hoo, easy peasy.

CD3_gather

Step 3: Gather goodies. Now let’s create a super happy quick background  to give this picture a great home! Start by gathering a few art supplies—anything that makes you happy is fine. I am going to limit myself to just a few things for this page. Limiting my time AND limiting my supplies, I find, is a super fun way for me to get a bit more creative. Today I’m playing with some things I have kicking around that have holes or patterns I can use to build my background. Things like lace paper, stencils, sequin waste and plastic canvas. Then I’m going to choose a few mediums to color my page with: a tube of acrylic paint, some spray ink, India ink and a few art pencils. CD4_prepare and tape

Step 4: Protect your work surface. Ffor an extra-quick, extra-messy page, you definitely want to cover your work space. I  am using a big piece of packing  paper that I have been using for awhile now ( I can’t wait to use it in my work once it is all covered in lots of yummy mess!). Once you have chosen a background paper, grab another paper that you can tear up and quickly tape down to add texture to a corner of your background. I am using old book pages on mine and letting lots of the edges stay free.

CD5_spray

Step 5: Spray ink or paint over a “mask.” Now the fun begins! Lay down your first “holey” surface over your papers and spray ink or splatter paint right over it to begin building up your background pattern.

CD6_paint

Step 6: Keep playing. Lay down your next holey surface and add more color and pattern right over top! Notice how my acrylic paint keeps some of its shape when I really glob it on? Go for it, my friends! Get those hands dirty. CD7_ink it

Step 7: Splash on some ink. Now that we have a few layers going on, let’s grunge it up a bit with some carefree splats of India ink (black watercolor paint/watered down craft paint will also do just fine). No careful placement needed—just drip and splat to  your heart’s content!

CD8_Halfway there

Step 8: Add some texture. For a few really tactile bits, cut some random  strips of ribbon  to add  over and under your photo for a soft border, and  a few bits of rub-ons to throw down wherever you please. I am going with some numbers from Maya Road that are supposed to be dates. I’m just going to use them ALL, because this page is about living “out on a limb,” and I want to do that EVERY day! CD9_draw

Step 9: Channel your inner child. Once my photo  is adhered  over and under my ribbon strips with some foam  squares to help it have a bit of “pop” off  the page,  I am going to draw a symbol of my message right over all of my layers. My choice is a tree, not only because I want to live “out on a limb,” but also because it is a symbol of growth.  No careful thought here, either, friends. This is not going in the art gallery—it’s just like kindergarten! Grab a colored pencil, be free and  slap it right on that page doodley-doo!

CD10_wire

Step 10: Get wired, if desired. I have a little love for messing up things like string and wire all curvy and crazy and sticking them on my pages to create a little bit of movement. I can’t help it, I just like a bit of kooky, crazy fun! On this page I am using dollar store jewelry wire and hubby’s wire snips. Just cut a nice long piece and just start bending it with your fingers and twisting it around. Some people like to do the shaping with pliers, but I find that I have a bit more control with my hands. I just bend away until I kind of like the curves, and I stick it down by either tucking a few bits behind the page, or by using some Tacky Glue to hold it down in a few places. ( It dries clear.) CD11_TapeLeaves Step 11: Create tape leaves. For my final little touch I am going to make some tape leaves. Tape a few pieces around your wire and then cut them into leaf shapes and color with your pencil crayons. You can try using a few different tones of tape for a cool mixed look and tuck a few larger “leaves” behind the photo, too. This little cluster will add some dimension to the page and a bit of cute character as well.

That’s it! Our one hour “scrap therapy”  is all complete, and hopefully it was as much  fun  for  you as it was for  me. Here is my finished layout called ” On a Lovely Limb“: CD_Lovely Limb

Thanks for hangin’ out with me and taking a peek into my crazy creating. Please come and leave me a note on my blog sometime, and definitely share a link to your layouts if this was an inspiration for you to get creative or try something new!

Have a great weekend,

CD

Farewell to Becky

Once in a millennium, a person comes along who possesses everything that you’re looking for in a role model. She inspires those around her to become better people, better artists aBecky_Headshotnd better scrapbookers. She lights up a room with her smile, and she is one of the best people around. For many of us, for the last 12 years, that person has been Becky Higgins.

The name Becky Higgins is synonymous with scrapbooking. You can’t think of one without the other. After all, Becky’s first  Creating Keepsakes article was in our fourth issue, and she has regularly contributed to the magazine ever since. Now after 12 years, 9 books and numerous articles, each of us has fallen in love with Becky, her sketches, her family and her ability to inspire.

Becky_Titles_sm

Becky has decided that the time has come for her to leave Creating Keepsakes and set sail on a new course. We are sad to lose such a wonderful member of our team, but we are excited to see what the future will bring for her. As she stated on her blog, “I’m not going anywhere. I’m not dying. I’m not quitting this hobby. I’m not running away. I’m totally here. (And so is CK. I wish them all the best!)”

Don’t worry, Becky will continue to inspire scrapbookers all over the world, and Creating Keepsakes will continue to bring you awesome sketches and inspiring ideas. Each issue will continue to have a sketch insert (and we’ll still offer online downloadable sketches, too), because everyone loves sketches!

As a fun send-off, some of the CK staff members have written farewell notes for Becky. Please leave a note of your own to Becky in the comments section and let her know how much you’ve appreciated her and her contributions to CK.

***

I started with CK in 2001 and by then, Becky was well on her way to being the great inspiration and talent she is today. I can remember early on how impressed I was with how genuine and humble she was and how very kind she was to me. I am so blessed for having known her and for having been able to work with someone so amazingly creative! Thanks for everything, Becky. You totally rock!

Joannie McBride, Assistant Editor

***

I remember first meeting THE Becky Higgins just a few weeks after starting with CK. (Was I the luckiest person in the world or what?) She was as nice and kind as I had pictured her to be. Since then, she has continued to impress me with her kindness, her passion for scrapbooking, her love of the CK readers (and everyone), and her example of womanhood. Becky is an all-around class act. I have loved working with her on the CK team! I know she will continue to inspire us in everything she does.

Brittany Beattie, Managing Editor

 ***

It has been such a pleasure working with Becky over the years. Becky is such a wonderful person, and she is an example to me in so many ways. I’ve always been impressed with how much she has been able to accomplish, her impressive organization skills and her love for her family and the gospel. She helped CK become an amazing magazine. Our readers have loved and been inspired by Becky for so long, and now, as she pursues other ventures, I’m sure she will continue to touch lives the way she has with Creating Keepsakes. Becky, I wish you the very best. Thanks for being you.

Erin Bayless, Creative Director

***

As the creative editor for CK, I really admire what Becky has done for this position. As the original C.E., she’s set the bar amazingly high with her inspiring ideas and welcoming personality. On a more personal note, working with Becky has been a pure pleasure. It’s obvious that she loves what she does by the way in which she does it. As much as I’m going to miss her as a regular fixture in our magazine, I’m comforted by the fact that she is following her bliss and will remain a very close friend of the Creating Keepsakes family. I wish you all the best, sweet Becky. May this next step in your journey be everything that you hope it will be and so much more!

Megan Hoeppner, Creative Editor

***

As a budding scrapbooker, I was so inspired by Becky’s talent and accessibility. Like many others, I always felt I knew her, as I watched her family grow and thrive. Over the years, Becky’s Sketches books became seriously dog-eared in my library, and they remained a go-to resource for me when helping entry-level hobbyists understand basic page design. As I’ve come to know Becky better through trade shows and our interactions as colleagues, my respect for her has grown exponentially. Becky is a lovely, talented, generous, genuine soul.

Becky, both professionally and personally I thank you for sharing yourself through this hobby for 12 wonderful years. I’m confident that you’ll continue to inspire others and remain an ambassador for memory keeping, and I can’t wait to see the new magic that you’ll undoubtedly create!

Beth Opel , Senior Online Editor

 ***

Unlike most scrapbookers, my first experience with Becky Higgins wasn’t really about scrapbooking. Within a few months of starting work here, I had the opportunity to work with her on her Creative Cards special issue. She was incredibly gracious and easy to work with, and it was so much fun to see her talented card designs for every occasion take shape into an inspiring issue that set the bar high for all of the card-making magazines that followed it.

That’s how Becky is: talented, kind, creative and fun. For 12 of Creating Keepsakes’ 13 years in print, her fabulous pages, sketches, fonts and more have been an integral part of what has made CK inspiring, fresh and appealing. We’ve been so lucky to have her on board. And while we’ll miss having her and her designs be a part of each and every issue, we’ll look forward to her contributing in future issues. And we love her and wish her all the best.

Jennafer Martin, Editor-in-Chief

***

I’m so impressed by Becky’s creativity, sharp eye for design and kindness. Becky has brought so much to the scrapbooking community and industry these past 12 years and has inspired thousands of women all over the world to celebrate their lives through this wonderful hobby of ours. Becky, you’ve made a difference to so many people. It’s been an honor to work with you.

Lori Fairbanks, Product Editor

 ***

I remember reading some of the very first Becky Higgins’ articles in Creating Keepsakes when I first began scrapbooking in 1997. Her letter styles were so cool and inspiring and she made me feel as though I could create beautiful pages just as she did. Over the years I’ve enjoyed seeing her family and career grow through her articles and pages. Becky, you are an inspiration and a mentor to so many, and I want to thank you for putting your passion and hobby to work to inspire all of us. You are wonderful.

The October issue of Creating Keepsakes is now on newsstands, and we’re thrilled to share it with you. We’re especially excited because this issue is themed as our “Top 10” issue for 2009. In the magazine you’ll find the top 10 tips and ideas for numerous topics. Since I can’t fit them all in one post (without making it over 10 feet in length), I’ll share an overview of 10 of my favorite articles from the issue. Did I mention that the magazine provides over 10 outstanding ideas for each of these topics?

1. Clever new ways to dress up chipboard

2. Fun and inexpensive font finds for your most-scrapbooked themes

3. Pictures to capture your life every month of the year—that’s 120 photo ideas in the article!

4. The best photos to take this fall

5. Design tips for scrapbooking Halloween festivitiesOctober 2009 CK

6. Fun activities to participate in throughout the month

7. Free type paths for journaling in a shape (You’ll find them as free downloads in this article.)

8. Top tips for adding stitching to your layouts

9. Layouts about yourself (I know you may not want to make them, but it’s worth taking the time! Get started with one of these six easy quizzes.)

10. The best adhesives in 10 categories (Our editorial team spent over eight hours testing boxes of different brands and products to find the best ones for your creativity.)

And now for a little behind-the-scenes peek into the creation of the October 2009 issue.

In our April issue, we called for your “Amazing Pages.” Boy, did we have a hard time narrowing the submissions. The task was too difficult, so rather than stopping at just 10 pages, we selected 20. We shared 10 of them in the magazine, and you’ll find the other 10 here.

On pages 50–51, you saw a glimpse of the amazingly talented Mou Saha’s craft room. We’re pleased to share her blog with you as well, so you can get to know her (and be inspired by her) even more.

To test the adhesives for #10 above, we scored all the products using this rubric.

We saw many more Halloween-themed products than we could fit into the magazine. For example, you saw some of this great Trick or Treat line from Little Yellow Bicycle, but I couldn’t resist showing you these accents as well.

And check out this festive Eerie collection from BasicGrey.

You’re sure to find this delightful Spooky Town collection from Imaginisce to be a real treat.  I love it!

Plus, I can think of plenty of ways to use Glimmer Mist from Tattered Angels to add a spooky feeling to my scrapbook pages.
