Kim JacksonWhile creating every issue of Creating Keepsakes, we have a blast looking through all of the new scrapbooking products, trying to decide which ones will make our Latest & Greatest column. Of course, we never have enough space for all of the goodies we’d love to share with you. So we’ve decided share a few more of the producs that sparked our imaginations from each issue here on our blog—and we’ll give you the chance to win some of the fabulous products. Let’s get rolling!

Claudine Hellmuth Studios – Ranger Industries

We discovered the amazing line of Claudine Hellmuth Studio products from Ranger Industries at CHA back in January, and shared a couple of videos of sweet Claudine demonstrating just a few of the fun things you can do with her Sticky Back Canvas. You’ll love adding texture and color to your pages with this wonderful, on-trend line of products.

Eggdrop Soup – Jillibean Soup

With Easter right around the corner, our eyes are open for bunnies hopping down the bunny trail. The adorable Eggdrop Soup line from Jillibean Soup is a perfect addition to your stash, whether you’re looking for something to jazz up your Easter pages or a simple, cute new way to add a splash of springtime to your pages.

Double-Sided Edger Punches – EK Success

A sweet daisy chain will add just the right touch of springtime charm to your layouts—and with EK Success’ new Daisy Chain punch, you’ll have a true daisy chain, punched out on both sides. You’ll love this new punch design, as well as the others in the EK Success’ new line.

Green at Heart – BasicGrey

Earth Day is on April 22, and you’ll love adding a touch of “green” to your layouts with BasicGrey’s bright and fabulous new Green at Heart line. Printed on FSC-certified paper with soy-based inks, you can have a wonderful time creating a scrapbooking layout and feel good knowing that your paper is eco-conscious.

Wow, that’s a lot of scrapbooking goodness! How would you like to win some of these products for yourself? (Silly question—of course you would.) In addition to giving away the products above, you’ll also have a chance to win the E-I-E-I-O Collection from TaDa Creative Studios, as seen on page 48 of our March/April 2010 issue.

All you have to do to win one of these outstanding products is leave a comment telling us which of our Latest & Greatest products from the March/April 2010 issue of CK (or from this post) is your favorite and why you love it by Monday, April 5. We’ll draw five random winners (one for each product shown here) on or around April 6 and announce the winners on the giveaways tab located at the top of our blog.

Have a wonderful day!

Weekly Warm-Up: Melt the Ice

Kim JacksonWelcome to March, everyone! You know what they say: if March comes in like a lion, it’ll go out like a lamb. Since most of us are still digging out from February’s snowstorms, we can certainly hope that warm, sunny days are right around the corner. In today’s weekly warm-up, we’re going to focus on techniques that are sure to heat up the last of your winter layouts and coax all that ice to melt.

Heat Emboss Accents

Turn up the heat on that last bit of wintertime fun by adding heat-embossed accents to a sledding, skiing, or snowboarding layout. Wendy Sue Anderson embossed her stamped title in addition to her accents on this adorable layout.

Iron on Designs

Next, fire up (okay, plug in) your iron! If you’ve ever ironed on patches to clothing or bags, then this technique is for you. Mou Saha applied an iron-on rhinestone-heart design to canvas to accent her darling “Valentines” page. Look for iron-on flower designs to add a little spring to your layouts.

Create Hot-Glue Art

You’ll want to reach for your hot-glue gun for this next irresistible idea. On her “Forever Friends” layout, Mou Saha drew a simple shape using a low-temperature hot-glue gun, and then she painted over it. Try drawing some fluffy clouds or four-leaf clovers for a March-inspired look.

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to get warmed up with some ice-melting techniques! Try one of these ideas this week, and upload your completed layout to our gallery. We can’t wait to see what you create.

Kim JacksonYesterday, Megan Hoeppner showed you how to spread some Valentine’s Day cheer with quick and easy valentines. Today, with some help from a few of our CK Dream Team members, you’ll discover fabulous ways to celebrate the love in your life through scrapbooking and sharing photos. Whether you’re into romance or not, these fun projects are sure to make your heart happy.

While Cindy Tobey made her gorgeous “Love” page to commemorate Mother’s Day, you can easily make this layout to celebrate your family on Valentine’s Day. Her color combo makes for a beautiful break from the traditional—simply combine red, pink, and black with vivid splashes of turquoise and green.

Tickets. Tickets, please. This is the CHA Express, and we’re ready to embark on the 2010 Cute Booth Tour. This CHA, each of the CK editors in attendance (Brittany, Joannie, Kim, and I) selected our favorite happy places and captured short videos of some of the booth highlights. Plus, we added one bonus booth, simply because we couldn’t resist including one more dose of show-floor bliss. So grab yourself a seat near the window, and get ready to see some of the cutest booths on the CHA block. All aboard!

Stop #1: The Girls’ Paperie, Joannie McBride’s pick

This sweetie-pie place is full handmade paper delights, including paper garlands, the sweetest little street of houses you’ll ever encounter, and a special guided tour by Ms. Margie Romney-Aslett, the creative talent behind this new line!

Stop #2: Unity Stamp Co., Megan Hoeppner’s pick

As you likely know, I’m a bit of a bird nerd. So when I saw the stuffed bluebird perched on the picket fence in this wonderland, I knew instantly that it had my vote.

Stop #3: Couture Cardstock, Brittany Beattie’s pick

One look at this amazing booth and you’ll fall in love with your cardstock all over again. This impressive location was adorned with incredible cardstock creations, including dresses, shoes, and even an Eiffel Tower.

Stop #4: Graphic 45, Kim Jackson’s pick

Step back in time with this vintage hot spot and discover the limitless possibilities for transforming just about anything from old to new with little more than a sheet of debonair paper.

Stop #5: Pink Paislee, a group bonus pick

There’s no way we could leave out this bright spot out of our Cute Booth Tour. It’s packed with handmade pizzazz. From stitched chicken wire to a charming sitting area, this place was definitely worth visiting.

Well, that concludes the Cute Booth Tour for this show. Did you have a nice time? What spot(s) captured your heart? Rather than leave your tour guide a tip, we’d love to have you leave your feedback in the form of a comment by Monday, February 8, 2010. And the tip may end up being yours, as we’re giving away a fabulous CHA prize package from Jillibean Soup to one lucky tour attendee. Check the “Giveaways” tab on Tuesday, February 9 to see if you’re our winner.

Now, exit to your left and watch your step. We want to see you back on this tour bus again next CHA.

Cheers!

CHA Winter 2010: Insider’s Look

It’s another sunny day in Anaheim, California, and things are heating up at the winter 2010 Craft & Hobby Association (CHA) tradeshow. In today’s insider’s look at the happenings around the show floor, we’re peeking in on some of the excellent make & takes and project demonstrations going on. (‘Cause you know we love project ideas!)

Making Memories
Let’s start with a visit to the Making Memories booth. I can see their enormous die-cut butterfly chandelier from here!

There’s been a lot of buzz on the show floor about the new hands-free Slice die-cutting system that made that chandelier. Let’s see what it’s all about.

Ranger Industries

The ever-so-talented Claudine Hellmuth taught a class here at CHA on how to create a slew of different looks using her new sticky back canvas from Ranger Industries. She offered us an inside look at two of her awesome techniques.

Hambly Screen Prints

We adore rub-ons, and all the crazy ways you can use them to dress-up everything from notebooks to scrapbook pages to jewelry. Jewelry? Oh yes! Allison Abad showed us how to personalize simple wooden bangles . . . Hambly style.

Of course, half the fun at CHA is the chance we all get to hang out with friends, old and new! Here’s an insider’s look at lunch with the contributors to both Creating Keepsakes and Paper Crafts magazine.

We still have two more days of fun here in California, and many more exciting ideas to share with you. What has been your favorite product or technique so far? Leave us a comment for a chance to receive your own CHA prize package!

Have a wonderful day!

Meet Our Newest Team Member: Kim Jackson

01/14/2010 at 4:00 am | Posted in Get-to-Know | 20 Comments
Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Today I have the pleasure of introducing the newest editor (senior editor over print, to be exact) to join the CK crew: Kim Jackson. I had the pleasure of working with Kim at a major stamp manufacturer a few years back, and I can say from that experience and what we’ve already seen her do at our office that we’re lucky to have Kim on our team. Not only is she an excellent writer/editor, but she’s also a passionate scrapbooker and paper crafter. Hooray! Now, let’s get to know this green-loving, Judy-Blume-spotting, corner-chomping gal through a little Q&A.

Nicknames: Kims (yes, like there’s more than one of me—hee!), Kimmi, Kimbo, and Stooge.

Favorite scrapping tool: The Corner Chomper from We R Memory Keepers!

Met any famous people? Children’s book author Judy Blume. She’s a legend.

Favorite color: Green. I love all shades.

Favorite cake, cupcake or pie flavor: I love red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting. They’re divine! As for pie, it’s pecan all the way.

If you were a crayon, what color would you be and why? Wow, what a question! I’d probably be aquamarine—it’s such an amazingly happy color and kind of sassy.

Favorite place to shop: J.Crew. I could easily blow a million dollars there. I’m in love with the work they’re doing lately with color, texture, and fine details. Jenna Lyons (the creative director) is a genius—did you see the new women’s collection store in the latest issue of Lonny (see page 55)? Simply stunning!

Your motto for scrapbooking: As long as I love it, that’s all that matters.

Thanks for the entertaining read, Kim!

Watch for articles and blog posts to come from Kim in the future. In the meantime, please join me in welcoming her to our team.

Cheers!

Here’s the challenge. Take your entire stack of 2009 Creating Keepsakes magazines and narrow down all the happy content to the following four “bests”:

* Best Feature (for any reason that works for you)

* Best Organization Tip (yes, you can choose only one)

* Best Technique (broad, I know)

* Best Layout (no, you can’t have a 16-way tie)

It’s a tough task, isn’t it? Well, it’s just what I asked my fellow CK editors to do. And after much page flipping, I’m happy to share the responses from Brittany Beattie (online senior editor), Dorathy Gilchrist (associate editor), Joannie McBride (assistant editor), Kim Jackson (senior editor), and myself. Ready for the results? Okay, here we go!

Best Feature
Each issue, we offer 6-10 features (not to mention the 18 columns, which we didn’t include in the mix for voting). Times that number by 12 issues, and you have a big decision to make. The votes are in, and (in no particular order) our top features—rated strictly on personal opinion—are as follows:

  • Brittany: “A Day in Your Life” (by Lisa Bearnson, May ’09, pg. 63)
  • Dorathy: “Scrapbookers Making a Difference” (by Joannie McBride, Feb. ’09, pg. 89)
  • Joannie: “Flights of Fancy” (by Beth Opel, Apr. ’09, pg. 79)
  • Kim: “The 10 Most Important Pages Missing from Your Album” (by Brittany Beattie, Oct. ’09, pg. 85)
  • Megan: “Festive Techniques for Trimming the Trees” (by Brittany Beattie, Dec. ’09, pg. 59)

"A Day in Your Life": Brittany's pick for best feature of 2009

Best Organization Tip
Getting organized is a common goal around here. These are the tips that really tickled our tidy bone:

  • Brittany: Organize ribbon spools by hanging them on the wall (as seen in “Creative Spaces” by Megan Hoeppner, June ’09, pg. 34)
  • Dorathy: Create a brad book (as seen in “Tips & Tricks” by Megan Hoeppner, Sept. ’09, pg. 114)
  • Joannie: Let your scrap space evolve with your scrapbooking needs (as seen in “Creative Spaces” by Mou Saha, Oct. ’09, pg. 50)
  • Megan: Category cleanup: set your timer for 15 minutes and choose a product category as a focus of your organization efforts (as seen in “In Just 15 Minutes” by Lori Fairbanks, Nov. ’09, pg. 77)

Store brads in a brad book: Dorathy's pick for best organization idea of 2009

Best Technique
At heart, we’re all technique geeks, which made this challenge an extra-fun one! Here are our top picks:

  • Brittany: Create glitter pillows with a transparency sheet and a sewing machine (as seen on the “Sweet Slumber” layout by Elizabeth Kartchner, 52 More Scrapbooking Challenges, pg. 134)
  • Dorathy: Create a stained-glass look with alcohol inks and a transparency sheet (as seen on the “Leaf Samples” card by Irene Tan, May ’09, pg. 112)
  • Joannie: Add glitter to self-adhesive products (as seen on the “Big Sister” layout by Ria Mojica, Feb. 09, pg. 97)
  • Kim: Create a chalked background using mesh as the template (as seen on the “Fantasy Land” layout by Megan Hoeppner, Sept. ’09, pg. 79)
  • Megan:  Create tissue-paper flowers (as seen on the “Balance” layout by Steph Caskey-Devlin, July ’09, pg. 107)

Make flowers from tissue paper: Megan's pick for best technique of 2009

Best Layout
I’m starting to feel like an announcer at an awards show. And the “Best Layout” vote goes to . . .

  • Brittany: “Drew’s View” (by Allison Davis, May ’09, pg. 83)
“I love the idea of scrapbooking photos taken by children—it’s a wonderful change of perspective that adds great insight into our scrapbooks. What an incredible addition this layout will be to Drew’s album!” —Brittany Beattie
  • Dorathy: “Signs of Summer” (by Kim Watson, July ’09, pg. 24)
“I love how bright and colorful the layout is without being overbearing. The layout offers a great color scheme to go with the summer photos. I also like how it has room for seven pictures.” —Dorathy Gilchrist
  • Joannie: “The Hat That Grandma Made” (by Shelley Aldrich, Sept. ’09, pg. 64)
“I love that Shelley has photos of not only her daughter in the hat but the grandmother holding the daughter wearing the hat as well—it’s a great connection. Plus, the whimsical feel of the page appeals to me.” —Joannie McBride
  • Kim: “Yindi and Unky Tobz” (by Emily Falconbridge, Jan. ’09, pg. 79)
“The pure energy of this design caught my eye immediately! I adore the modern look Emily created by combining red and yellow patterns and red ink splashes with the old-fashioned typeface in the journaling.” —Kim Jackson
  • Megan: “Homemade Pie” (by Joscelyne Cutchens, Nov. ’09, pg. 85)
“What’s not to love about this layout? The pie looks delicious, the photos are vivid, the color scheme is a real eye catcher, and it’s loaded with awesome techniques!” —Megan Hoeppner

"The Hat That Grandma Made": Joannie's pick for best layout of 2009

So, do you agree with our selections? We’d love to have you join us in this challenge. Tell us what has really stuck with you from our 2009 lineup. Let’s compare notes.

Going over these results was a wonderful reminder of the amazing year we had. Now, bring on 2010!

Cheers!
