lori-andersonDo you have a “go-to” stack of favorite videos that are a guarantee to put a smile on your face? You may have seen the video before, but watching it makes you laugh, makes you cry or even inspires you. One of my favorite movies of all time is the movie Rudy, starring Sean Astin. It’s a movie about determination, hard work and daring to dream even when others tell you it’s a waste of time. It’s a movie that inspires me to try harder every day. Have you seen it?

Here at CK, we’ve got a stack of videos we’re pulling out to inspire you. This is the first post of a series that we’re calling “Video from the Vault” featuring CK videos from the past. This video features the talented Ali Edwards as she shares her four favorite tools with the readers of Creating Keepsakes. Check out the video and be inspired to go and create something wonderful.

Enjoy watching videos like this one? We’re scheduling new video shoots with our team soon, so let us know what you’d like to see in an upcoming segment. We could be featuring a cool technique, a tip, a tool trick–whatever. Let us know what you’d like to learn by leaving a comment. We’ll add it to our list.

MargieRomneyAslettHey it’s me Margie Romney-Aslett! I’m so excited to be “guest blogger” today! I have been scrapbooking and papercrafting for close to 22 years. For the past 5 years I was a product designer for Making Memories, and now I am thrilled to be starting an online business with my daughters Megan & Brooke called The Girl’s Loft. One thing I loved about designing product was creating style programs–choosing the look and theme, picking the colors and putting it all together.  That’s what we will be doing at the Girl’s Loft gathering our favorite products from all of our favorite companies! It’s going to be fun!

Today I created a layout using some products from our first kit. I have to say . . . I have been scrapping a lot lately and I am loving all the fun products on the market. I have been “getting my hands dirty.” One thing about me, I am a clean hands kinda girl, but with all the great inks, paints and glimmer mist out there, I have been getting dirty!

 Margie_Blog_Proj_Web

Supplies: Cardstock: Bazzill Basics Paper; Patterned paper: Dream Street; Border punch: Fiskars Americas; Brocade: Pink Paislee; Letter stickers: American Crafts; Ink: Ranger Industries; Glimmer spray: Tattered Angels; Label: Scenic Route; Other: Buttons, crepe paper and vintage music sheet.

On this layout I created, I used a few of my favorite new techniques. For the first technique, I created the title of my layout “best friends” using stickers to create a mask.

Then I took the Glimmer Mist and sprayed it over the stickers and randomly over the base of my layout. Make sure when you put your stickers down you press hard enough so that the Glimmer Mist won’t seep underneath, but not so hard they don’t pull up!

Step_2Web

Once your Glimmer Mist is dried, pull up the stickers carefully. Love the outcome!

Step_2AWeb

The second technique I used was creating a border with crepe paper. Here, I took 24 inches of crepe paper and did a gathering stitch down the middle of the crepe paper, tied it off on both ends and then adhered it to my page.

Step_3Web

Ruffle it up then cover the center stitch with a border created with a scrap of printed paper and a Fiskars scallop border punch.

For the last technique, I created flowers using 3 different size circle punches and 3 printed papers. Mix it up, distress the edges, wrinkle the paper up in your hand then ink it. Layer your circles to create flowers.

Some fun tips: Use non-traditional scrapbooking products like vintage music sheets as paper and crepe paper to create a border. Use ric rack edged scissors to trim wallet sized black and white photos to give them a vintage feel.

This layout was fun to create! I hope I was able to inspire you to play and get your hands dirty. For more inspiration and beautifully designed kits join me, Megan and Brooke at The Girl’s Loft, Monday, June 15th. We’ll be previewing the first Girl’s Loft Kit!

Kiss kiss,
Margie

Weekly Warm-Up: Using Circle Punches!

megan_headshot-sm6Hey, all you circle-punch fans, stand up and clap your hands! To get your creativity a flowing this week, I have a warm-up idea taken from the pages of our May 2009 issue. In our “Tools & Techniques” column, Jennifer McGuire presents six unique ideas for using circle punches. Inspired by Jennifer’s ideas, our team sat down and made the following projects:

shaped-card-lf

Inspired by Jennifer’s idea of folding punched circles into thirds to make a dimensional flower, Lori Fairbanks created  a shaped Mother’s Day card. Here’s how:

1. Punch eight large circles from the same sheet of patterned paper.

2. Fold each circle into thirds.

3. Adhere the circles to a card base and trim around the edges to make a shaped card.

4. To complete her look, she added a rhinestone brad to the center of her flower.

Beth Opel tried the same technique, but she punched ten smaller circles and used a button for the center. And instead of making a card, she’s going to use this to add a pop of dimension to a scrapbook page.

Joannie McBride tried another one of Jennifer’s tips, which is to make a faux scallop border out of several punched circles. Here’s how:

1. Punch five medium-size circles from the same sheet of patterned paper.

2. Line the circles up on the card, tucking half of each shape behind a piece of patterned paper to create a faux scallop border.

If you’re an American Idol fan, you’ll recognize the object of Joannie’s affections-Matt Giraud, one of this season’s AI contestants. He has the hearts (and the votes) of many around our office. I’m actually an Adam fan this year, but not for any heart-throb reasons. I just think that boy can rock! But, I digress.

I went with Jennifer’s trick of creating dimension using circles. Here’s how I created the paper lanterns on my card:

1. Punch six-seven circles and fold each circle in half.

2. Glue the folded circles together to create the popped look.

The punches shown here are from Fiskars.

These are only three of the ideas Jennifer covers in our May issue. For more inspiring ideas, please check out the magazine. While you’re at it, I’d love to hear your ideas for using this staple tool in fresh ways. If you have any, I hope you’ll take a minute to share in the comments section of this post. Who knows, you  may just see your suggestion show up in a future issue of the mag.

Happy Monday!
