It’s a happy day, indeed! The sun is shining. The temperature is a comfortable 60 degrees (and will be a beautiful 70 before the day is through). And the trees are in full bloom. I snapped this picture on my way into the office this morning. Mother Nature sure knows how to put on a show, doesn’t she?
For tips on how to capture spring in all of its stunning glory, check out our “How to Photography Spring Foliage” article by CK expert and photography pro Candice Stringham.
At last, it feels like spring. In the spirit of this amazing season and Earth Day (this Wednesday), I thought I’d share a few ideas for capturing the feeling of spring on your projects using basic scrapbooking supplies.
To create my Happy Day card (above), I used a combination of supplies and techniques. Two of my three trees are stamped. Using the Sheltering Tree stamp set from Gel-a-Tins, I stamped the same two trees in red, orange, blue, light green and dark green. I then trimmed and layered the stamped trees to create these blooming beauts. For additional dimension, I added pearl and bling blossoms.
Creating the middle tree was super simple. I took apart a two different Lollipop Flowers from Prima and reassembled the flowers to create a multi-colored bubble tree. I love these flowers. They’re great for brightening up any design.
Turn any scrap of patterned paper into a fun and funky tree using shaped punches like this one from Marvy Uchida.
Check out what sassy Cindy Tobey did with circle punches, some buttons, a little felt and some brads. This page is taken from the “Tips & Tricks” column of our April 2009 issue. Very inspiring!
As I mentioned above, stamps are a quick and easy way to create a tree. If you have a Creating Keepsakes Convention coming to a town near you (click here for dates and locations), I highly recommend you take our “One Stamp Set Ten Techniques” class, where you’ll make this striking page (designed by Wendy Sue Anderson) among other adorable projects.
Notice how she has turned her stamped tree (created with a super cute Hero Arts stamp set) into a springtime bloomer with bitty flowers and brads. Awesome!
So, are you inspired to bring a little spring to your projects? If so, I have the giveaway for you. I’m giving away a bucket full of goodies, including:
- The Spin Cycle circle stamp set from Gel-a-Tins
- Three sets of Prima Lollipops
- And a brilliant assortment of brads from Little Yellow Bicycle
Do you want to enter to win this bucket of delights (bucket not included)? Simple leave me a comment on this post, telling me your favorite technique for adding spring to your layouts. This can be anything from added button flowers to sewing your own fabric blossoms.
You have until this Sunday, April 26 to leave your comments. I will announce my winner in next week’s “Weekly Warm-Up” post next Monday.
Good luck!
Megan Hoeppner, Creative Editor
P.S. Speaking of giveaways, do you remember my “Brad Bonanza” giveaway? Well, I still have a few unclaimed prizes waiting for homes. If you have a minute, click here to see if you’re one of my lucky names. Thanks!

Spring – Love it! My favorite way to add spring in my pages is through color. Fresh colors that dust off the winter blahs and help to usher in the sun, flowers and the smell of fresh mown grass.
Comment by Kristin— 04/21/2009 #
Ahhh Spring..my layouts always start with my family’s trip to the smokey mountains..hikes and adventures in the national park..
It signifies spring in every book.
I love to use my die cuts flowers (I use the cricut but they all have them) and add some twinkle with gems and glitter.
By far my favorite spring page has been the “Puddle Duck Day” with my nieces playing in the puddles, umbrellas and glitter and water drops from old swimming stickers..

Oh what a cool bucket fulla springtime joy!! Thanks for being so generous Megan 🙂 I absolutely love all kinds of flowers, whether they be premade or handmade but I must say that I tend to lean more towards the felt and fabric kind with pretty little brad, button and bling centres! Nothing to make a page quite as springy as a whole bunch of flowers and of course a little tweeting birdie on the side is a given 🙂 BTW, adore both the card and the layout!! Bella

The circle-punch/button tree is adorable. This could work for many different themes, too, not just spring.
Comment by Kelly— 04/21/2009 #
Having a little boy limits the amount of frills I can use on his pages. If I had my druthers, I’d chose 3-D flowers and sequins. But I refrain and am satisfied with bright colors to exemplify spring.
Comment by Danielle— 04/21/2009 #
Spring means Easter pictures and Easter colors, then pictures of my garden with lots of green!
Comment by Sara-Jane— 04/21/2009 #
The best way to add ‘spring’…PINK! For some reason, if I add pink to a design it instantly feels more springy. Also, little birds. Something about a little bird in the corner means warmer weather.

I like adding hand-cut layered flowers or punched butterflies to my pages and cards to give them a springy feel.

Flowers and birds say “spring” to me! And soft, cheery colors!

Spring scrapbooking to me means bright pastels and patterned paper, some with glitter to add sparkle. I also like to use sunny yellows, especially with Easter LOs. Eggs, butterflies and flowers add extra touches. This year I’m taking photos of my spring flowers and flowering trees to add to my scrapbook.

I love to use colour, like green and blue as I am a mom of boys it is hard to use flowers but I certainly try to sneak a few in there…thanks for sharing

I love to get out the bright spring colors, handcut flowers and add some sparkle 🙂

I LOVE spring! It is my favorite season! I also love to add “seasoning” to my spring layouts! Glitter and sparkles on flowers, buttons and brads on trees. I think my favorite thing to add though, would be a bee, a bird, or a butterfly (or 2 or 3!) to my springtime layouts to represent the beauty of what spring really is…the rebirth of all things spring!

I love using photos of my garden from last year on cards. It is even more fun to use a picture from the recipients garden!
